IELTS – Tips for the Global English Language Test

To those who are looking for International academic and professional opportunities, you need to answer this English language proficiency test, IELTS.

What is IELTS?
IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. The purpose of this test is to find out how proficient you are in the English language. As a proof of your ability to speak English, more than 8000 organization worldwide accept the candidates who have cleared this exam. People usually take this exam if they are planning to apply for a job or for higher education in an foreign nation. Also if you are migrating to one such country you might need to answer this test.

Why IELTS?
IELTS is a proficiency exam to find out what your English level is. IELTS Exam tests your – reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Conducted 4 times in a month, this test consists of two modules –  General and Academic. The General is for those who are migrating whereas the Academic module is for people who want to take admission in colleges and universities abroad.

Now for some tips…

There are four parts of IELTS exam and are conducted in the following order:

  1. Listening
  2. Reading
  3. Writing
  4. Speaking

Tip number 1

Practice listening
You can choose a library or any quiet place where you can sit and listen to audios to focus your concentration. Also, watch English news channel like BBC and others to understand the accent.

Tip number 2

Read a Lot
To clear your reading test, you need to read a lot. As they practice makes a man perfect. Choose any of your favorite topics, sports, news, fashion, even reading a comic book would do. The main goal is to read. You can use a watch to check the speed of reading.

Tip number 3

Hone your writing skills
Choose a topic and start writing. There are various topics to choose from, education, politics, environment. Start building up a list vocabulary around these topics and use them while building the essay. Divide your essay into four parts. First part will be the introduction. The second and the third part will be your body. The last part will be the conclusion. Don’t forget to check your grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Again don’t forget to use a timer before you start to pen down.

Tip number 4

Start communicating
Start communicating in English if you haven’t yet. The best way to start is with your family member and friends who are good in speaking. This way you will know your mistakes and also it will build your confidence to speak fluently. Use a mirror if you feel shy to speak. Prepare conversation and practice it in front of the mirror. This helps you to speak without hesitation. Use hand gestures if required.

Well preparing for an exam isn’t easy. You need to put your 100% efforts for getting outstanding results. If you are falling short, you can always approach your nearby coaching center. A little push to your efforts isn’t a bad idea, right?
